Lessons Learned: Reflecting on the Humbling Moments of My Past Choices

Updated: Jan 16, 2024

Looking back I made some poor choices that led to me being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure.

You see I have learned life is full of choices and we don’t always make the one’s that are best for our own good in the long run.

I remember in May of 2009, my physician informed me that I was prediabetic. Well my work involved being a “road warrior” consultant at that time - about 46 weeks a year traveling, and I literally ate most lunches and dinners at a lot of restaurants including fast food. I especially loved fried chicken - KFC or wherever I could get it. Quite honestly, I didn’t take my doctor seriously about how dangerous diabetes was and if anything my eating habits were out of control at that time and several years prior.

I went back for a 6 month follow-up visit on Nov 9, 2009. (It’s funny how you remember vividly some days of your life.) Well, sadly within 6 months time, I went from pre-diabetic to full blown type 2 diabetes and the rest of my blood work was a “mess”.

I hate showing this photo of me with the pink shirt that was taken the same month that I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes - Nov 2009 - when I weighed my heaviest, 232 pounds.

In hindsight, I wish I had taken my doctor more seriously when he was practically pleading with me to start eating healthier and get some good walking exercise in. In fact, he had been warning me for many checkups before that I was living “dangerously”.

How many of you can relate to this story?

Lesson learned: Our physicians give us fair warning most always long before we become obese and diagnosed with serious disease. So it would be better to make healthy lifestyle changes a lot earlier in life beforehand.

Fortunately, thanks to starting an optimal health program in Jan 2021, I am in my best health in decades. I am much more proud of this photo taken of me this summer with the palm trees in the background when I weighed 155 pounds. (My current weight that I have maintained for the last 3 years now.)
